ISO Transition Risk Scorecard

Score. Sequence. Succeed.

Ten factors that decide how smoothly your certificates move to ISO 9001:2026 and ISO 14001:2026: timing, sites, registrars, readiness and resources. Each certificate gets its own total, risk band, recommended audit route and start point the moment you finish. Answer for how things stand today, and for your least-prepared site where a question asks about sites.

Which certificates are you transitioning?

Global ACI dates as of October 1, 2026: ISO 14001 transition complete April 30, 2029 (new 2015-edition certificates end October 31, 2027) · ISO 9001 transition complete September 30, 2029 (new 2015-edition certificates end March 31, 2028). Confirm your dates with your registrar. The scorecard is a recommended method, not a requirement of either standard.

About the Scorecard

What Is the ISO Transition Risk Scorecard?

Score. Sequence. Succeed.

The ISO transition risk scorecard is a free, ten-factor tool that rates how ready each certificate is to move to ISO 9001:2026 or ISO 14001:2026. It turns timing, sites, registrars, readiness and resources into one score per certificate, a risk band, and a recommended audit route and start point.

Direct Answer: The ISO transition risk scorecard scores ten factors from 1 (low risk) to 3 (high risk) for each certificate. A total of 10–15 is Low, 16–23 is Moderate and 24–30 is High, and each band points to an audit route and a start date for the transition.

Which ten factors does the scorecard measure?

  1. Cycle position: whether a scheduled audit falls in time to carry the transition.
  2. Number of sites: every site has to be ready at once when a registrar samples sites partly at random.
  3. Site similarity: sites doing different work may not be eligible for sampling.
  4. Number of registrars: each registrar transitions on its own accreditation timeline.
  5. Registrar readiness: whether each registrar has confirmed its transition arrangement in writing.
  6. Degree of system change: how far procedures are from the 2026 editions.
  7. Internal audit readiness: audit objectives and auditors ready for the 2026 editions.
  8. Management review readiness: the 2026 inputs and outputs built into the agenda and minutes.
  9. Standard-specific evidence: quality culture and ethical behaviour awareness for ISO 9001:2026 (Clause 7.3 e)), or context, environmental aspects and compliance obligations for ISO 14001:2026.
  10. Resources and competence: a named owner, with budget and time approved at management review.

For an integrated quality and environmental system, the ISO transition risk scorecard scores both certificates side by side and runs a combined audit test: if one registrar holds both certificates and neither scores High, both standards may transition at the same audit.

What are the transition dates behind the scores?

As of October 1, 2026, Global ACI's ISO 14001:2026 transition requirements end new 2015-edition certificates on October 31, 2027 and complete the transition on April 30, 2029. Global ACI's ISO 9001:2026 transition requirements end new 2015-edition certificates on March 31, 2028 and complete the transition on September 30, 2029. Confirm the dates that apply to you with your registrar.

How should you use your result?

Record the scores through your own risk procedure, plan an action for every factor that scores 3, and take the result to management review so the decisions on changes and resources are recorded. The full method, including multi-site sampling and transfers between registrars, is set out in MSI's guide to the ISO transition risk assessment. The ISO transition risk scorecard was developed by Management Systems International (MSI), drawing on 28 years of ISO consulting, 80+ certifications supported, 200+ audits attended and 600+ professionals trained. It is a recommended method, not a requirement of either standard.

ISO Transition Risk Scorecard: Frequently Asked Questions

Is the ISO transition risk scorecard free?

Yes. Your totals, risk bands, recommended routes and highest-risk factor appear as soon as you finish, without signing in. Entering a name and email unlocks the factor-by-factor breakdown.

Can I score ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 together?

Yes. Choose Both (Q/EMS) and the scorecard asks 14 questions, scores each certificate separately, and tells you whether a combined transition audit is worth considering.

Does ISO require a transition risk assessment?

Neither standard names one. Both require changes to be planned under Clause 6.3, and ISO 14001:2026 Clause 6.1.4 requires risks and opportunities to be available as documented information, so a recorded scorecard is a simple way to show both.

What if one of my sites scores much lower than the others?

Plan to that site. Registrars sample sites partly at random, and an open major nonconformity at any one site holds the certification decision for every site on the certificate. For help sequencing sites and registrars, call MSI at 760-434-9141 for a planning session.
