The technical content was frozen when the Final Draft International Standard ballot closed, so the text is settled; what remains is publication and the start of a transition period expected to run roughly three years, to approximately September 2029. That timing collides with the pharmaceutical supplier qualification wave in a specific and awkward way, and it is worth being precise about the collision rather than dramatic.

Certification opens the door. It does not walk you through it. There is a set of expectations specific to regulated pharmaceutical supply that no ISO management system standard requires by name, and a supplier who has only ever been audited by a certification body will meet them for the first time in a pharmaceutical supplier qualification audit. Knowing them in advance is most of the advantage.

Change notification. The single most common source of friction in pharmaceutical supplier qualification. An owner needs to be told before you change a raw material, a subcontractor, a process parameter, a site, or a piece of equipment that touches their product — because a change you consider routine may invalidate their validation. ISO 9001 requires you to control change; the quality agreement requires you to announce it, often 90 or 180 days ahead. Preparation

How Do You Prepare for Pharmaceutical Supplier Qualification in 90 Days?

Scope. Document. Evidence.

Ninety days will not produce a first certificate from a standing start; certification realistically runs six to twelve months depending on size and starting condition, and anyone promising otherwise is selling something. No. No regulation requires a supplier to hold ISO 9001. The regulation requires the pharmaceutical manufacturer to establish and document the reliability of its suppliers, and certification is the most efficient evidence available for discharging that obligation. The requirement is commercial and contractual rather than statutory — which in practice makes it no less binding.

How long does pharmaceutical supplier qualification take?

For an already-certified supplier with an assembled pharmaceutical supplier qualification pack, typically six to twelve weeks from questionnaire to approved supplier list. Do we need ISO 13485 instead of ISO 9001?

Only if what you supply becomes part of a medical device or a combination product such as a prefilled syringe, autoinjector or on-body delivery system. For drug product manufacturing support, ISO 9001 is the general expectation. Note that ISO 13485 does not share the harmonized clause structure used by ISO 9001 and ISO 14001; it retains an earlier architecture, so the two are not interchangeable documents.

Our certificate covers one site. Is that a problem for pharmaceutical supplier qualification?

It is a problem if the work will be performed, in whole or in part, somewhere the certificate does not cover — another facility, a field installation, or a subcontracted operation.
